Lab Grown Diamond Pendant Necklace: How to Choose the Perfect Pendant
A diamond pendant is often the first “real” diamond piece people own, and the one they wear most. It sits close to the face, goes with almost everything, and doesn’t need a ring size. Lab-grown diamonds have made it easier than ever to choose a bigger or better stone. A lab grown diamond pendant necklace now makes sense as an everyday piece, a milestone gift or a treat for yourself.
With so many shapes, settings and sizes, though, choosing the right one takes a little thought. This guide walks through each decision in order: shape, size, setting, bail, metal and chain.
Step 1: Choose the Pendant Style
Solitaire pendant. A single diamond on a simple setting. It’s the most classic and versatile style, and it puts all the attention (and the budget) into one stone.
Halo pendant. A centre diamond framed by a ring of smaller stones. The halo adds sparkle and makes the centre stone look noticeably larger. Square halos give a vintage, art-deco feel, while round and oval halos look softer.
Motif pendant. Crosses, flowers, hearts and other shapes set with diamonds. They carry personal or spiritual meaning, which makes them popular gifts for birthdays, graduations, religious occasions and Mother’s Day.
Drop pendant. A stone suspended so it moves slightly when you do. Pear and oval drops are especially elegant for evenings.
What we see in our own range: Of the 24 pendants in the Daval Jewels collection in September 2026, 13 are square halo designs, 5 are crosses, 2 are flowers, 2 are “mother” pendants, and 2 are solitaires in cushion and oval cuts. Total diamond weights run from 0.52 to 1.26 carats. Halo designs lead for a simple reason: they make a centre stone of well under a carat look far larger on the neck.
Step 2: Pick a Diamond Shape
- Round: The most sparkle and the most classic look. It suits every setting.
- Oval and pear: Elongated shapes that look larger for their weight and create a flattering vertical line on the neck.
- Cushion: Soft, pillow-like corners and a romantic, vintage feel.
- Princess and emerald: Clean, geometric lines. Emerald cuts show a hall-of-mirrors effect instead of sparkle, so they need higher clarity.
- Heart and marquise: Distinctive and symbolic, especially as gifts.
Shape matters more on a pendant than you might think, because the stone faces forward all day. Try a few on before deciding.
Step 3: Get the Size Right
Carat is weight, but what you notice is the stone’s diameter. For well-cut round diamonds, these are typical face-up sizes:
| Round diamond | Approximate diameter |
|---|---|
| 0.50 carat | 5.1 mm |
| 0.75 carat | 5.8 mm |
| 1.00 carat | 6.5 mm |
| 1.50 carat | 7.4 mm |
| 2.00 carat | 8.1 mm |
A few guidelines:
- 0.50–0.75 carat is a delicate, everyday size that suits any outfit or workplace.
- 1.00 carat is the classic size, clearly visible without being heavy.
- 1.50 carats and above makes a statement. It’s ideal on its own or with a halo for evenings.
Because lab-grown prices have fallen fastest for larger stones, moving up in size is more affordable in 2026 than it was a year ago. According to Edahn Golan’s wholesale data, 2-carat lab-grown stones fell 20% year on year in Q2 2026.
Step 4: Choose the Setting
The setting holds the diamond and affects both the look and how secure it is.
- Prong setting (3, 4 or 6 prongs): Shows the most diamond and lets in the most light, for maximum sparkle. Check the prongs periodically.
- Bezel setting: A thin rim of metal around the stone. It’s the most secure and snag-free option, ideal for everyday wear and active lifestyles, and it has a sleek, modern look.
- Halo setting: Protects the centre stone’s edge and adds sparkle.
- Floating or “invisible” setting: The diamond appears to hover on the chain. It’s minimal and contemporary.
Step 5: Don’t Overlook the Bail
The bail is the small loop that connects the pendant to the chain. It’s easy to ignore, but it matters:
- Fixed bail: The pendant is attached to the chain and always faces forward. It’s neat, but you can’t change the chain.
- Sliding bail: The pendant slides freely along the chain, so you can swap chains, though it may shift around.
- Hidden bail: Tucked behind the pendant for a clean, uninterrupted look from the front.
Also check the bail is big enough for the chain you want to use, and strong enough for the pendant’s weight.
Step 6: Choose the Metal
- White gold: Bright and modern, and it enhances colourless diamonds. Most classic solitaire and halo pendants use it.
- Yellow gold: Warm and fashionable again, with a vintage feel.
- Rose gold: Soft and romantic. It flatters warmer skin tones.
14K or 18K? 14K gold is 58.5% pure gold. It’s slightly harder and costs less in metal. 18K is 75% pure gold, with a richer colour. Both are good choices for a pendant, which takes far less wear than a ring. In the UAE, check for the gold hallmark on the piece.
Step 7: Pair It With the Right Chain
- Length: 18 inches (46 cm) is the most popular pendant length. It sits just below the collarbone and suits most necklines. 16 inches sits higher, while 20 inches works over high necklines and for layering.
- Style: Cable chains are classic and strong. Box chains look sleek, and rope chains add texture. Match the chain’s weight to the pendant’s size.
- Clasp: A lobster clasp is more secure than a spring ring for a valuable pendant.

Step 8: Check the Diamond and Certificate
For any pendant with a significant centre stone, ask for an independent IGI or GIA report and check the number online. In lab-grown diamonds, colourless grades and high clarity are standard. In our own certified inventory, 98.8% of stones are D–F colour. So focus on cut quality and size rather than paying extra for the very top grades.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size diamond pendant should I choose?
For everyday wear, 0.50–0.75 carat is delicate and versatile. 1 carat is the classic choice. 1.5 carats and above makes a statement. A halo makes any centre stone look larger.
Is a lab grown diamond pendant necklace real?
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemistry, hardness and sparkle as mined diamonds. Their origin is recorded on the grading report.
What chain length is best for a diamond pendant?
18 inches (46 cm) is the most popular. It sits just below the collarbone and suits most necklines. Choose 16 inches for a higher look, or 20 inches for layering and high necklines.
Is a bezel or prong setting better for a pendant?
Prongs show more of the diamond and give more sparkle. Bezels are more secure and snag-free, so they’re better for everyday, active wear.
Is a diamond pendant a good gift?
Yes. Pendants don’t need a ring size, suit almost any style, and motif designs such as crosses and flowers add personal meaning. That makes them one of the most popular diamond gifts.
