Lab Grown vs Natural Diamond Price in UAE: Full 2026 Comparison
Lab-grown and natural diamonds look identical and are made of the same material, yet their prices are worlds apart. The lab grown vs natural diamond price gap is now so wide that, at 2 carats, a lab-grown stone costs about 89% less than a comparable natural one, according to diamond analyst Edahn Golan. And the gap isn’t standing still. Both markets moved in different directions through 2025 and 2026.
This guide compares the two side by side: how big the price difference is, how it changes with size, where each market is heading, and what the difference means for your budget in the UAE.
What is the price difference between lab grown and natural diamonds?
- At 1 carat: a lab-grown diamond costs about 82% less than a typical natural diamond.
- At 2 carats: about 89% less. The gap widens as stones get bigger.
- On a finished engagement ring: couples spent about US$4,300 (≈ AED 15,800) on lab-grown rings against US$7,000 (≈ AED 25,700) on natural, and still chose bigger stones on average (2.0 ct vs 1.6 ct).
- Over time: natural diamonds keep more resale value. Lab-grown prices are still falling.

The headline: lab-grown buyers spend less on average and still get a bigger diamond.
Why Lab-Grown Diamonds Cost So Much Less
Both are real diamonds, pure carbon with the same hardness and sparkle. The price difference comes from supply, not quality.
Natural diamonds are finite. They formed over billions of years and have to be found, mined and sorted. Large, high-quality natural stones are genuinely rare, and prices reflect that.
Lab-grown diamonds are produced to order. HPHT and CVD growers can make more whenever demand rises. As production capacity expanded, prices fell dramatically. Golan’s Lab-Grown Diamond Wholesale Price Index is down 96% since July 2018.
Dubai sits at the centre of both trades. The UAE traded a record 76.9 million carats of lab-grown diamonds in 2025, up 91.5%, according to DMCC. Natural diamonds still made up 95.8% of Dubai’s US$41.7 billion diamond trade by value.
How the Price Gap Changes With Size
The lab grown vs natural diamond price gap isn’t the same at every size. It gets wider as stones get bigger, because large natural stones are rare while large lab-grown stones are now readily produced.
In 2026 the two markets are also moving differently by size:
| Size | Lab-grown wholesale (year on year) | Natural (Rapaport index, Aug 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 0.30–0.50 carats | — | +2% to +2.5% in the month |
| 1 carat | +1% (Q2 2026) | +0.5% in the month, the first rise in 15 months |
| 1.50–1.99 carats | −11% (Q2 2026) | — |
| 2 carats | −20% (Q2 2026) | — |
| 3 carats | −28% (Q1 2026) | −0.4% in the month |

What this tells you: At 1 carat, both markets have roughly levelled off, so the gap is fairly stable. At 2 carats and above, lab-grown prices are still falling quickly while natural prices hold steady. That means the gap is still widening for larger stones. If you’re shopping for a big diamond, lab-grown value is improving month by month.
Retail Prices Haven’t Fallen as Fast as Wholesale
Here’s a detail many buyers miss. Wholesale lab-grown prices have collapsed, but shop prices haven’t fallen as much. Industry analyst Paul Zimnisky found in May 2026 that retailers were still marking up lab-grown diamonds by more than 80% over wholesale. That margin barely changed between 2025 and 2026.
For you, that means two sellers can charge very different prices for similar lab-grown stones. Comparing like-for-like quotes, meaning the same shape, size, grades and certificate, matters even more with lab-grown than with natural diamonds. Buying closer to the source, from a supplier that also trades wholesale, can narrow the gap.
What the Price Difference Buys You
The savings from lab-grown usually go into a bigger or better diamond, not a cheaper ring. The Knot’s 2025 data shows couples choosing lab-grown spent about US$2,700 less on average, yet chose centre stones averaging 2.0 carats against 1.6 carats for natural.
The trade-off is flexibility:
- Same budget, bigger stone: Choose lab-grown and move up in carat weight.
- Same stone, smaller budget: Keep your target size and grades, and spend the difference elsewhere.
- Same budget, better quality: Lab-grown makes colourless, high-clarity grades affordable at almost any size.
Resale Value: The Other Side of the Price Gap
Low prices come with low resale value. Because lab-grown prices keep falling, a lab-grown diamond typically resells for a small fraction of what you paid. Natural diamonds hold value better, but they aren’t guaranteed investments either. Natural prices also softened through 2025.
We cover this in detail in our guide to whether lab diamonds are a good investment. The short version: buy lab-grown to wear and enjoy, not to resell.
Lab-Grown or Natural: Which Should You Choose?
Choose lab-grown if:
- You want the largest, best-quality diamond your budget allows
- You’re buying to wear, not to resell
- You prefer a transparent, documented origin
Choose natural if:
- Rarity and a stone formed by nature matter to you
- You want an heirloom with stronger long-term resale value
- Your budget comfortably covers your target size and grades
Whichever you choose, insist on an independent IGI or GIA report. Since October 2025, GIA rates lab-grown diamonds Premium or Standard instead of using the full 4Cs, while IGI grades them on the full 4Cs. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the lab grown vs natural diamond price difference?
According to Edahn Golan's 2025 data, a lab-grown diamond costs about 82% less than a typical natural diamond at 1 carat and about 89% less at 2 carats. The gap is widest for larger stones.
Are lab-grown diamonds cheaper in the UAE?
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds cost a fraction of natural diamonds of the same size and grade. Dubai is a major lab-grown trading hub, with a record 76.9 million carats traded in 2025, which supports wide choice and competitive pricing.
Will lab-grown diamond prices keep falling?
The decline has slowed. Wholesale prices fell 13% year on year in Q2 2026, and 1-carat rounds rose 1%. Larger stones are still falling faster, with 2-carat stones down 20% and 3-carat stones down 28%.
Are natural diamond prices going up?
They're stabilising. Rapaport's 1-carat index rose 0.5% in August 2026, its first increase in 15 months, after falling 9.9% in 2025. Smaller stones recovered faster.
Is a lab-grown diamond worth less than a natural one?
It costs less to buy and has much lower resale value. But it's physically the same material, with the same hardness and sparkle. The difference is origin and rarity, not appearance.
