Ready-made jewellery is quick and easy. But sometimes the piece you have in mind doesn’t exist yet: a pendant in a particular shape, a necklace in rose gold instead of white, or a stone just a little bigger than the one in the display case. That’s where custom lab grown diamond jewellery comes in. And because lab-grown diamonds cost far less than mined ones, going custom is now realistic for many more buyers.

This guide explains when custom makes sense, what you can change, how the design process works step by step, and which questions to ask before you commission a piece in Dubai.

Ready-Made or Custom: Which Is Right for You?

Choose ready-made when a design in stock already matches what you want, or when you need the piece quickly. Choose custom when you have a clear idea, want a specific stone, or want to hit a precise budget by adjusting the size, metal or setting.

What You Can Customise

Most custom lab-grown diamond pieces let you change four main things.

The Metal

The metal sets the whole look. Common choices:

• 14K white gold: Bright, durable, and uses less pure gold than 18K
• 18K white, yellow or rose gold: Richer colour and higher gold content
• Platinum: Naturally white, dense and hard-wearing, and usually the most expensive

Two-tone designs, such as a white-gold setting on a yellow-gold chain, are also possible with many jewellers.

The Stone Shape

Round gives the most sparkle. Oval, pear and marquise look larger for their weight and flatter the neckline. Emerald and Asscher cuts give a sleek, geometric look. Cushion and radiant sit in between.

You’ll have plenty of choice at custom stage. Among the 335 certified lab-grown diamonds in the Daval Jewels loose-diamond inventory in September 2026, round was the most common shape (132 stones), followed by pear (40), oval (34), marquise (29) and emerald (26). There were also cushion, princess, radiant, heart and Asscher stones.

The Carat Weight

Custom lets you set the stone size precisely instead of settling for what’s in stock. Lab-grown prices have fallen fastest for larger stones. Edahn Golan’s wholesale data shows 2-carat stones down 20% year on year in Q2 2026. So stepping up in size is more affordable than it was.

The Size and Proportions

• That means the pendant’s overall dimensions, the halo width, the thickness of the chain and the necklace length. These details decide how the piece sits and how it wears every day.

The Custom Design Process, Step by Step

Every jeweller works slightly differently, but a typical custom process looks like this.

1. Share Your Idea and Budget

• Bring photos, sketches or a description, plus a realistic budget. Be clear about which matters most: the size of the diamond, the metal, or the overall design. That tells the jeweller where to spend and where to save.

2. Choose a Certified Diamond

• For pendants and solitaire designs, choose the centre stone first. Ask for an independent IGI  report and check the number online. Colourless, high-clarity grades are standard in lab-grown diamonds, so focus on cut quality, shape and size.

3. Agree the Design Details

• Settle the setting style (prong, bezel or halo), the metal, the bail type for pendants, the chain style and length, and the clasp.

4. Approve Before Production

• Ask how you’ll see the design before it’s made. That might be a sketch, a 3D render, a wax model, or a similar existing piece. Don’t approve until you’re happy with the proportions.

5. Production and Finishing

• The piece is made, set and hand-finished. Ask for the expected completion date, especially if it’s for a specific occasion.

6. Final Check on Collection

Before you take it home, check:

• The certificate number matches the laser inscription on the stone
• The gold hallmark is present and shows the agreed karat
• The clasp and settings are secure
• The invoice states “laboratory-grown”, the stone details, the metal and the karat

Custom Necklace and Pendant Design Ideas

• A solitaire in your favourite shape. A single pear, oval or marquise diamond on a fine chain. Simple, but completely yours.
• A halo in a contrasting metal. A white-gold halo on a yellow-gold chain gives a modern two-tone look.
• A matching set. A pendant and stud earrings with stones of the same shape and quality.
• A meaningful motif, resized. A cross, flower or other symbol made in the exact size and metal you want.
• A bigger stone, same budget. Keep a classic design but use lab-grown to move up in carat weight.
• A statement drop. An oval or pear centre with a double halo for weddings and events.

Choosing an Ethical Diamond Necklace or Pendant

A custom piece is a good moment to ask where your diamond comes from. Lab-grown diamonds avoid mining altogether, but “ethical” and “sustainable” should still be backed by facts, not slogans. Here’s what to look for in an ethical diamond necklace or pendant:

• Clear disclosure. The stone should be identified as laboratory-grown on its grading report, on the laser inscription and on your invoice. In Dubai, members of DMCC’s lab-grown diamond ecosystem commit to full disclosure and to never mixing lab-grown and natural stones.
• Independent certification. An IGI  report confirms what the stone is. For environmental claims, look for third-party standards such as SCS-007, which certifies lab-grown diamonds against climate-neutrality, traceability and other sustainability criteria.
• Specific claims, not vague ones. Growing diamonds uses a lot of electricity, so a stone’s footprint depends heavily on the grower’s power source. The US Federal Trade Commission has warned jewellers against unqualified “eco-friendly” or “sustainable” claims. So ask how a claim is backed, for example by renewable energy or a named certification.
• Responsible metal. Recycled gold and platinum are increasingly available. Ask whether your setting can be made with them.

What Affects the Cost of Custom Jewellery?

• The diamond: Its size, shape and cut quality usually make up the biggest share.
• The metal: Platinum typically costs the most, then 18K gold, then 14K gold, because of how much precious metal each contains.
• Complexity: Halos, pavé and intricate motifs take more setting work than a simple solitaire.
• Changes after approval: Late design changes can add time and cost, so finalise the details before production.
• VAT: Diamond jewellery carries 5% VAT in the UAE. Visitors can usually reclaim it at the airport.
